A watch can look completely different on your wrist than it does in a product photo. Why? Because watch fit isn't determined by one measurement.
Case diameter matters, but so do:
Case diameter is usually the first specification you will see. A smaller diameter generally gives a more understated look; a larger case creates more wrist presence.
Don't treat diameter as a strict men's-versus-women's rule. Modern watches are worn across a wide range of sizes, and personal preference matters more than convention.
The lugs are the parts of the case where the strap or bracelet attaches. The distance from the top lug to the bottom lug can dramatically change how a watch fits.
Two watches with the same case diameter can wear very differently if one has long straight lugs and the other has short curved lugs. Ideally the lugs shouldn't overhang the edge of your wrist.
A thin dress watch and a thick sports watch can share the same diameter while feeling completely different. A thick case sits higher on the wrist and under a shirt cuff. If you often wear dress shirts or suits, thickness can matter more than diameter.
Different bracelets and straps alter a watch's visual proportions:
A steel integrated-bracelet watch such as the Citizen Tsuyosa will look more substantial than a similarly sized watch on leather.
Your wrist circumference is a useful starting point, but selecting a watch isn't like sizing a ring. Some people with smaller wrists love oversized watches; some people with larger wrists prefer traditional smaller cases.
The best size is the one that looks and feels right to you.
Specifications help you narrow the options, but nothing fully replaces seeing a watch on your wrist.
