Citizen TSUYOSA Buyer’s Guide: 40 mm vs 37 mm, TSUYOSA 60, Shore and Small Second

· Golden Gate Jewellery, North York

Citizen TSUYOSA 60 automatic watch with blue guilloché dial on an integrated steel bracelet

The Citizen TSUYOSA is the watch that put a genuine Swiss-style sports-luxury design — integrated bracelet, sunray dial, slim steel case — within reach of a normal budget, and it did it with a real mechanical automatic movement rather than quartz. Since its launch in 2023 it has grown into a small family. This guide walks through each version we carry at Golden Gate Jewellery, what actually changes between them, and how to pick the right one.

What every TSUYOSA shares

  • A self-winding automatic movement with a hacking seconds hand — no battery, ever
  • An integrated stainless steel bracelet that flows out of the case
  • A sapphire crystal, which resists everyday scratches far better than mineral glass
  • 50 m water resistance — fine for rain, hand-washing and a splash, not for swimming
  • Citizen’s 5-year warranty when bought from an authorized Canadian dealer

The name itself is Japanese for “strength”, and the design brief was simple: a watch that looks far more expensive than it is and can be worn every day without babying it.

TSUYOSA 40 mm — the original

The standard TSUYOSA (references beginning NJ015x) is a 40 mm steel case on the integrated bracelet, powered by Citizen’s automatic Caliber 8210 with a 42-hour power reserve. The dials are the reason most people fall for it: deep sunray finishes in blue, green, red, grey and a warm gold tone, each shifting with the light. On a 16.5–19 cm wrist the 40 mm wears like a classic sports watch — present, but not bulky. If you want the TSUYOSA everyone recognizes, this is it.

Browse the 40 mm references we carry: TSUYOSA NJ0150-56E (grey dial), NJ0150-56L (blue dial), NJ0150-56W (red dial), NJ0151-53M (blue dial) and NJ0151-53Z (gold dial).

TSUYOSA 37 mm — the same watch, smaller

The 37 mm version (references NJ0200) keeps the identical Caliber 8210 movement, 42-hour reserve, sapphire crystal and integrated bracelet, and simply shrinks the case. It is the right pick for slimmer wrists, for anyone who prefers a vintage-sized watch, and for women who want the same design without a “ladies’ edition” treatment. Colours include blue, red and a striking purple sunray. See the TSUYOSA 37 mm NJ0200-50L and NJ0200-50M. Because it is otherwise the same watch, choosing between 40 and 37 mm comes down purely to wrist size and taste — see our watch size guide if you are unsure.

TSUYOSA Shore — coastal colours

The Shore (references NJ0230, NJ0232 and NJ0238) takes the 40 mm automatic in a coastal direction: deep, marine-toned dials such as navy, on the same Caliber 8210 with hacking seconds and 42-hour reserve. Mechanically it is the standard TSUYOSA; the difference is the mood of the dial. If the regular colours feel too bright, the Shore is the understated choice — our current reference is the TSUYOSA Shore NJ0232-53X.

TSUYOSA 60 — the upgraded flagship

The TSUYOSA 60 (references NK002x and NK0032) is the one to look at if you want the most watch. Citizen’s newer automatic Caliber 8310 extends the power reserve to a full 60 hours — take it off Friday evening and it is still running Monday morning — and the dial moves from a plain sunray to a fine guilloché texture that catches light from every angle. It also moves to a jubilee-style five-link bracelet, which drapes more softly around the wrist. Available in black, blue, green and silver dials. It costs more than the standard model, and for a daily-wear automatic the extra reserve and finishing are worth it. See the TSUYOSA 60 NK0022-50A.

TSUYOSA Small Second — the dressy one

The Small Second (reference NK5010) adds a vintage-leaning twist: the running seconds move to a dedicated sub-dial, and the main dial gets a textured finish in blue or green. Same 40 mm steel case, same sapphire crystal, same integrated bracelet — but the sub-dial changes the character completely, from sporty to quietly elegant. If you are buying a TSUYOSA to wear with a suit as often as with a T-shirt, this is the version to try: the Small Second NK5010-51L (blue) or NK5010-51X (green).

Which TSUYOSA should you buy?

  • First automatic, best value: the 40 mm original in blue or green
  • Smaller wrist or vintage proportions: the 37 mm
  • Subtle, darker colours: the Shore
  • Longest power reserve and finest dial: the TSUYOSA 60
  • Dress-watch character: the Small Second

Whichever you choose, treat it like any automatic: wind it a few turns if it has stopped, keep it away from strong magnets, and have the gaskets checked every few years. Our guide to automatic vs quartz watches explains what to expect from a mechanical movement day to day.
