G-SHOCK Buying Guide: Why These Watches Are Built Different

Casio G-SHOCK GA-2100 analog-digital watch

Few watch names are as instantly recognizable as G-SHOCK. Casio built the collection around toughness, and decades later the formula still works:

  • Bold design
  • Useful functions
  • Shock resistance
  • 200M water resistance on most models
  • A huge range of styles and colours

Shock resistance

Shock resistance sits at the centre of the G-SHOCK identity. Models span many technologies and designs, but rugged construction remains the defining characteristic. The popular GA-2100 family, for example, uses Casio's Carbon Core Guard structure — a carbon-fibre-reinforced case that protects the module while keeping the watch slim.

Water resistance

Most G-SHOCK references are rated to 200 metres. Always check the specification of the exact reference you are considering — dedicated Frogman dive models carry additional dive-specific ratings. Our guide to watch water resistance explains what the numbers mean.

Classic digital G-SHOCK

If you want the traditional look, start with the square G-SHOCK. The DW-5600 family keeps the recognizable digital profile that people immediately associate with the name. Simple, tough and iconic — and one of the best-value watches in the range: the DW5600E-1V is the entry point, and the solar, radio-synced GWM5610-1 is the one you never have to set.

GA-2100

The GA-2100 combines analog hands, digital functions, slim proportions and angular octagonal styling. It has become one of the most recognizable modern G-SHOCK families, and for someone who wants G-SHOCK durability without the bulk of larger references, it is the one to try first — see the GA2100-1A1 (the all-black original), the GA2100-4A in red and the metal-bezel GM2100-1A. Casio's newest full-analog take on the shape is the GAC-2500, now available in Canada.

Full-metal G-SHOCK

G-SHOCK isn't limited to resin. Full-metal references — such as the GMW-B5000 square and the GM-B2100 metal-cased version — give the familiar designs a heavier, more premium feel. Depending on the reference, these can include stainless-steel cases and bracelets, solar charging, Bluetooth connectivity, radio time-syncing and sapphire crystal. Always verify the specifications of the individual watch.

Which G-SHOCK should you buy?

One of the appeals of G-SHOCK is that you rarely stop at one. Different colours, sizes and styles make them highly collectible — and at these prices they are easy to add to. See our guide to how much to spend on a watch.
